80/20 Custody Schedules
"80/20" almost always means some version of every other weekend: one parent handles the school week and most weekends, the other has alternating weekend time. The exact percentage depends on where the weekend ends — the calendar below lets you check the real number.
The honest math on 80/20
- Friday–Sunday with a Monday-morning return (three overnights): 6 of 28 overnights — 78.6% / 21.4%. This is the arrangement people usually mean by 80/20.
- Friday–Saturday with a Sunday-evening return (two overnights, shown above): 4 of 28 — 85.7% / 14.3%, closer to 85/15.

When an 80/20 schedule fits
Courts commonly order this shape when parents live far apart, when a child is very young, when one parent's work schedule can't support school-night care, or as a starting point that expands over time. Common Questions
Is every other weekend 80/20 or 85/15?
By overnights: 85.7/14.3 if weekends end Sunday evening, 78.6/21.4 if they end Monday morning. "80/20" is the everyday label for the whole family of every-other-weekend schedules.
Can an 80/20 schedule change later?
Custody orders can be modified when circumstances change, and many families step up parenting time as children get older or logistics improve. Talk to a family law attorney about modification in your county.
